Christmas Vacation

So, we're long overdue for another Familia Pearson update. First, Miriam is at her cutest. She just turned 1 year old in December (those poor December birthdays always seem to get overshadowed by Christmas). She loves climbing up on top of things-sometimes with disastrous results. In December, she went through a phase where she would cry at just about anything, but that probably had to do with the fact that she was teething and she got the stomach flu for a few days. Now, it seems like she's always smiling. We love it!

We started out Christmas vacation by going to Arizona. It was a blast. One of the most fun things that we did was go to Kitt Peak to see all of the big telescopes. Jeremy's brother, Robert, and his wife Mandy came with us along with his sister Cassy. We didn't realize beforehand, but it was freezing cold up there. Jeremy didn't even have a jacket. It was the most frigid picnic we've ever experienced. Who would have thought that we could go to Southern Arizona to cool off! But, the great thing is that we couldn't stop laughing the whole time.

Here's a picture of Rachel standing in front of Kitt Peaks's world famous solar telescope. It's a pretty big deal.

One of the most fun things that we did this Christmas was hand-make our own felt Christmas stockings. Jeremy drew all of the patterns by hand. Jeremy's mom gave us the suggestion to transfer the pattern to a sheet of "wonder under" so that we could just iron the felt pieces on. Brilliant! Now that we have the process down pat, we wish we had more children so we could make more stockings.

On Christmas morning, Emily was the last one to wake up in the whole house. Probably the only time that will happen for another thirteen years.

Jeremy's mom made some beautiful dresses for her granddaughters. Here's a photo of Miriam and Emily with their cousin, Sabrina. We love Emily's facial expression in this one.

For one day during our trip to Arizona, every member of the extended Pearson family was present. We took advantage of that and took a family picture. Good job with the shots, Ben.

Between Thanksgiving and Christmas

A few weeks ago, Rachel was surprised to find that both of the girls had climbed into the dryer together. She had to get a snapshot before she pulled them out. I guess, from now on, we need to check before we start the load.

Last week, Rachel and Emily made a gingerbread house together.

Emily has fallen in love with Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer. A few days ago, we made her some antlers and a red nose. She continued to wear them all day - including to the library and to Wal-Mart.

This has to be the cutest and funniest video that we have ever made with the girls.

The girls enjoy wearing their Christmas attire. Miriam loves wearing Emily's hand-me-down Christmas dresses. Emily gets mad sometimes that she has grown up so much that she's too big to wear them.

Today is Miriam's birthday. She's grown up so much in the past year. We almost can't even call her a baby now. She toddles around everywhere, she likes to play games like hide and seek, and she's starting to understand the words that we say. She's in a phase where she likes to giggle and smile all the time. We're just enjoying as much as we can before she turns two next year.

Snow White

Emily watched Snow White and Seven Dwarfs for the first time last week after we checked it out from the library. It instantly became her favorite (although she still likes to pretend that she's Rapunzel every now and then). We'll see how long this one lasts. Here's a cute video of her telling us about the movie while eating her Rice Crispies.

Here's another good one. We only eat breakfast cereal a few times a week (at the most), but when we do Emily likes to eat Rice Crispies. The day we made this video, she said that the Rice Crispies were hurting her throat, but then she kept on eating them. She finished her bowl and asked for another--the whole time complaining that they hurt her throat. It was hilarious!

Halloween 2011

It's official: Miriam is a walker. She's been getting the hang of it for the past couple weeks, but it's only been a few days that we've noticed that she actually prefers it to crawling. Our carpet is kind of short and scratchy, so I think she doesn't like how crawling scrapes her knees. Now that she can walk, she will only bear crawl if she does it at all.

Another official anouncement: Emily is potty trained. She's been using the potty a suo piacimento for the past couple weeks with only a couple accidents. I'd have to say that this has been a faith building experience on par with Moses parting the Red Sea. Emily was having so much trouble getting it. We've tried, patiently, to teach her for months but she just didn't seem to even get the point. She used to love to sit on the potty but she would never go. And, when she did have to go, she would never sit on the potty. Arg! Once, she even wet her pants while standing on top of her potty. That one still bewilders us. :) But, about two weeks ago everything just clicked. Hallelujah!

The girls have started to become very good friends (as long as Emily's not trying to sit on Miriam, which happens at least eight times a day). They love laughing at each other. Emily likes to pretend that Miriam is an alligator. Miriam always wants to see what her sister is doing and likes to follow her around the apartment. Here's a great video of the two of them together.

We had a great Halloween. Rachel dressed up like Peter Pan. Miriam was Tinkerbell. Jeremy and Emily were pirates. We were a hit at our branch's Halloween activity--especially among the children in Jeremy's primary class. This is the first year that Emily got to go trunk-or-treating and actually understood what was going on. Last year she kept trying to pull the candy out of her own basket and put it into everyone else's.

Jeremy carved a Mickey Mouse Jack-o-lantern this year. He carved it a few days before Halloween, which turned out to be a major blunder in the sultry climate of east Texas. The pumpkin rotted out so fast we couldn't even take it to our Halloween party. We did manage to take a picture of it, although we almost didn't make it because we had to recharge our camera battery for a night after we realized that it was decomposing.

Train Ride Outing

Last weekend, we went on a trip to Houston to visit Rachel's brother Chad and his family. We went to visit a special place that let us ride on these miniature trains. It was so much fun. Each ride was about 10-15 minutes long. Part of the ride went through the woods and over some little miniature bridges. It took Emily a few minutes before she started enjoying it. By the end of it she was shouting (exact quote), "Wahoo! We're riding on the train!" Miriam spat out her pacifier partway through the ride and Rachel just missed catching it before it landed in no man's land. Although it was later spotted by aerial reconnaissance, the binky ended up being declared MIA.

After we rode on the trains, we all had a picnic in the park. Emily really likes spending time with her cousins. For a few days before the trip, Emily couldn't stop saying, "Can we go see Uncle Chad and Aunt Sydney?" ot "Can I go see my friends: Tyler, Brandon, and Ashley?" This has been a landmark month for both of our girls. Miriam is starting to get good at walking and her first two teeth are starting to poke up from her bottom gummies. Emily is finally starting to get the whole potty training idea. She went this whole weekend with only two accidents. Now she likes to be called the 'potty princess'.

We started using cloth diapers this month and we're loving it. These diapers are so cool! Each diaper can be adjusted from size newborn to 6 using these easy snaps. They're really absorbent (we've never had a leak even though Miriam's diapers have been completely soaked). Each diaper only costs $5, so the diapers start paying for themselves within a month and a half.

October Update

Last year, we bought a few costumes for Emily on after-Halloween clearance. Lately, her favorite thing to do is to play "dress up". Her favorite is this pirate princess costume. We're pretty sure that she's going to want to wear it for Halloween this year. She looks really cute for only $3!

Baby Miriam is so beautiful.

Lately, Emily has liked putting her hair in a pony tail (now that it's long enough). We liked this snapshot of her because it shows how nice and sweet she is.

Emily's other favorite things to do are 1. pretend she's an alligator, shark or lion, 2. dance, and 3 sing. This video really highlights all those things. We also got a little surprise out of Miriam at the end.

We got so excited that Miriam took a step at the end of the video, that we spent the next half hour helping her practice. Her record was THREE BIG STEPS. Hooray! She's practically walking now.

We have to tell you some funny stories about the girls:

A few days ago, we were all eating Froot Loops in the kitchen before rushing to drop Jeremy off at school. Emily was having trouble scooping them up into her spoon and, recognizing that we were in a hurry, she said nonchalantly, "C'mon, cereal. Get out of the bowl and into my spoon. I want to eat you." We all laughed and Jeremy still made it on time.

This morning, Emily walked in the room with a frown on her face and said, "I'm sad." We asked her why she felt sad. "Because I'm not happy," she said. We asked her what happened to make her feel sad. "B-cause, I'm an alligator but I want to be a lion." She sat down and didn't say anything else about it all morning.

Miriam can crawl about as fast as Emily can run, and she likes to follow her older sister around the house. Sometimes Emily gets annoyed, but mostly Emily gets a big kick out of having a little sister that admires her.

Miriam also has a fetish about chewing on shoes--especially Emily's pink sandals.If we ever catch Miriam chewing on anything that she's not allowed to then she snickers (yes, snickers) and crawls away as fast as she can so we don't take it away from her. It's so cute.

Welcome To Texas!

Sorry, no pictures for now but just wanted to say that we are finally getting more settled in. Jeremy started classes on Monday, and he's been working for over two weeks now with his research job. I'll let him explain how awesome it is, since I don't usually remember all the exact terminology for what he is working on. It's hard work, that much I know, but he is learning A LOT! :)

Emily, Miriam, and I are trying to keep busy indoors, since we're not really used to the humid heat around here, but we are having fun. Miriam is learning to stand without holding onto anything, and Emily is just talking more and more all the time. She's got a lot of imagination, too, though lately that always seems to involve flying alligators. Not sure where she got alligators from, but she's always talking about them! :-)

Well, not much to tell, just that we made our first really big move and we are doing fine. Howdy! and have a great day, all y'all!

Lots of Fun and Lots of Packing...

So, not much to say except that we are very busy packing and trying to keep Emily and Miriam from unpacking or getting hurt by all the boxes they want to climb on and into! It's great fun, right? :) Also, we went to Jackson, Wyoming last weekend to see the sights and pick up Megan, Rachel's sister. We had a wonderful time as you'll see from the pictures. Jeremy hadn't been to Yellowstone or Jackson before, so we figured since we're moving farther away we'd better take advantage of it. Anyway, time to get packing some more, so here are some pictures from more of our July adventures. :)

So, July is going great for us! We got to celebrate our 3rd anniversary and the anniversary of the independence of this wonderful country. The Fourth was great; I went to my first ever parade, which was so much fun! Emily really enjoyed it, too.

She saw Rapunzel and Eugene, so that, of course, made the whole day worth it, right?

So, Jeremy usually ends up creating all of our blog posts, but I decided I should take some responsibility for it today by reporting that it's been a wonderful past three years. It's always fun to remember how romantic and easy life seemed when we were dating, engaged, and just married...I guess the best part is knowing that life is still romantic (I'm still married to the most wonderful guy!) and the easy part has been replaced by two of the sweetest girls I've ever known. Obviously, those of you reading this who have been married oodles of years, are chuckling at the fact that we've only been married three short years. Well, that's all we know and it's been incredible! All I can say is that I've experienced more wonder (and craziness) in the past three years than my whole life put together. So, thank you Jeremy and Emily and Miriam for making my life so full and meaningful.

Call Family Reunion

Two weeks ago, we went to the Call family reunion in Colonia Juarez, Mexico. It was held at a historic Mexican hacienda that dates back to the time of Pancho Villa. It was a lot of fun to relax, eat mexican tortas, and visit with family.

Emily and Miriam fell in love with a little kiddy pool that Uncle David bought for them. Watch Miriam laugh at the little rubby duckies and watch Emily accidently pop her water balloon. It's funny.

The whole time we were in Mexico, Emily kept refering to herself as "Rapunzel". She loves to say "I'm a lost princess, aren't I" and quote other lines from the movie. Emily had so much fun at the hacienda that she refused to take a nap. Needless to say, she got very, very tired by the end of the day. Watch this video and you'll see what we mean:

Notice how surprised Jeremy was she didn't call herself Rapunzel in the video. It looks like she's growing out of her Tangled phase.

Graduation and Easter

So, this is going to be a long post, because A LOT has been happening in the past week. Stick it out to the end; it's worth it. :)

Jeremy graduated from BYU last week with a bachelor's in Mechanical engineering. We are so proud of him.

Here's a funny story that happened during graduation. Before commencement, Jeremy's mom and dad took us out to lunch at the Pizza Pie Cafe (which is so delicious, by the way). Emily had so much fun that she didn't want to leave. When we put her in the car, she started crying as loud as she could. She cried so loud that Miriam started crying as loud as she could. Right around when the decibel level reached about 130, Emily abruptly stopped crying. She turned to Miriam and said, "No, Baby Mee-um. I'm crying!". We burst into laughter. Emily seemed confused and kept insisting that Miriam stop crying because it was her turn.

Emily had a lot of fun hunting for Easter eggs this morning. Emily, Miriam, and Rachel looked gorgeous in their Easter dresses on this beautiful Spring day.

So, Easter Sunday was quite the memorable experience today. We enjoyed a lovely sacrament meeting where the girls behaved surprisingly well. Just when we were really starting to enjoy Sunday school, Miriam interrupted us with a noisy bowel movement. Jeremy immediately handed Miriam over to Rachel. ;) She booked it to the mother's room, tearing off Miriam's dress as she ran. The onesie was un-salvageable. The supply of wet wipes in the diaper bag and the mother's room were soon exhausted. So, Rachel wrapped a naked Miriam in the nursing cover-up and raced to the bathroom (which happens to be on the opposite side of the chapel, right next to where we were in Sunday school). She bathed her in the sink and dried her with paper towels. Then she grabbed a bunch of wet paper towels and walked back to the mother's room in order to clean up the mess she had left. Amazingly enough, the gorgeous Easter dress was left unscathed (which is lucky, 'cause Rachel forgot to pack extra clothes).

As Rachel settled into Relief Society, she thought that it couldn't get any worse. Unexpectedly, one of the sisters from nursery brings in the Emily-Meister.Yes, she also had messed her diaper, which she hasn't done at church in months. Rachel gathered up the girls and the diaper bag, when much to her relief, a sister offered to hold Miriam. Whew! That's about when Rachel remembered that she had absolutely no more wet wipes, so she went to the bathroom to see if she could manage with paper towels and water...again. Luckily another friend of Emily's was in the bathroom with his mom for the same reason, and yes, she was prepared with a healthy stock of wet wipes.

So, moral of the story is, moms, don't ever underestimate your children's potential.

We finally decided

After talking to several professors and considering all the different factors including family finances, career paths, satisfaction, etc. we decided that we are going to Texas A&M. Both Rachel and I have always had a good feeling about it. I mentioned to Rachel that it feels like what Elder Bednar said at the last General Conference about the sun rising on a cloudy day.

There have been several professors that have told me that as soon as they hear back about their grant proposals they will contact me about becoming a research assistant. I also found out that, if the RA thing doesn't work out, I would most likely qualify for a department scholarship and in-state tuition. We also realized that the cost of living is almost half as much in Texas as it would be in Salt Lake City and they have much better job placement. Plus, I don't really want to be a Ute...

So, College Station, here we come!

Decisions, decisions...

So, we found out that Jeremy has been accepted to Texas A&M, which means he was accepted to all of the schools to which he applied. Hooray!

We are leaning toward going to Texas, but we still need to contact a few professors to see if what kind of assistanceship opportunities are available. Right now, we are just trying to decide between University of Utah and Texas A&M. Both have their pros and cons. Neither school has made us an offer for research assistance yet, but Jeremy has made appointments to have interviews with some professors within the next week.

It's an exciting time and we thought that we would let everyone know.

Emily's Birthday and other News

A few nights ago, Emily accidentally spilled a bottle of cinnamon all over herself. Like any parent eager to catch a memory of their child being silly, Rachel and I immediately started snapping pictures. The picture below doesn't even show a part of how much cinnamon she had all over herself by the end of it all. All of us were laughing, but (come to think of it) Emily seemed a little uncomfortable.

Eventually, we put her in the bathtub to rinse off. It didn't take us long to see that her skin was a bold, bright red everywhere that the cinnamon touched. We had no idea she is allergic to cinnamon! We felt like such horrible parents because we let it stay on her skin for so long--more than twenty minutes. About an hour later, the redness went away.

Cinnamon hasn't seemed to affect her when she eats a little bit of it, but we think that we'll back off it for awhile before we let her try some again. From what we've been able to read, some children grow out of their mild allergy to cinnamon. With others, it only gets worse with time. Poor girl.

Emily had her 2nd birthday recently. Her two favorite presents were a ballerina costume and a picture book about fruits and vegetables. Special thanks to everyone that brought her a gift. We also had a piñata in the shape of a number 2 that was filled with fruit snacks, mini oreo cookie baggies, fruit roll ups, and the like.

By far, her favorite thing about her birthday was her birthday cake. She's been anticipating it for months. Anytime anyone mentioned anything about a birthday in the past two months, Emily immediately reminded us about her "birfday cake" Rachel decorated the cake herself.

Emily also had her first haircut this weekend. We just had her hair trimmed to even it all out. We were so surprised how much she held still when the stylist was working on it. Good job Emily!

There's not a whole lot of news with Miriam lately. She's so cute and only takes half as much work to take care of as Emily. We'll make sure to have more pictures of her next time.

We are trying to decide where Jeremy should go to graduate school. So far, he has been accepted to BYU and the University of Minnesota and he is waiting to hear back from Texas A&M and the University of Utah. Last weekend, Jeremy flew out to Minneapolis to visit U of M at a recruiting event. It looks like a good school, but we'll have to wait to hear back from the others before we make a decision. Here is a picture of the Mississippi river and downtown Minneapolis.

Happy Valentine's Week...

Well, only one picture today, but I just had to write about what a great day we had today! I (Rachel) went to the eye doctor which means I will finally have real glasses! (Those of you who have been around a lot lately know exactly what I mean; though, Megan, I am very grateful for my make-shift glasses that you put together for me...) Jeremy and Emily took care of Miriam while I was gone; they made "piglets in a blankie" for lunch and Emily loved that.

Later today we all watched a fun movie together as a family; we always love when Daddy comes and is home. This evening Jeremy, Miriam and I went out to dinner while Emily played with a good friend in our ward. We went to Olive Garden (thanks Dad and Mom Pearson!) and it was so, so delicious. The best part had to be the dessert, by the way, so if you go to Olive Garden anytime soon, try the Zeppoli. Mmmm! They are soft Italian doughnuts sprinkled with powdered sugar, and you dip them in a chocolate sauce. Heavenly!

To top off our wonderful date, we prayed together before Emily went to bed and she learned an awesome new phrase in Spanish:

"Yo te amo!" which means "I love you!"

They Grow Up Too Fast

One Saturday afternoon not too long ago, we decided to be spontaneous and go bowling (partially because Jeremy was tired of doing his homework). Emily really got a kick out of pushing the ball down the ramp and watching the pins drop.

Miriam has been growing like a beanstalk. We took her to the doctor today and she weighed 11.1 lbs and was 23 inches long. That means that she she grew three inches and almost doubled her weight in two months!

Miriam has been a doll lately (aside from the occasional fits of inconsolable crying that all babies have once in a while). We love how she has learned how to smile lately.

An Eventful December

There have been so many things going on this December that it's hard to find just a few pictures to show everyone. Here are a few that pretty much sum up all of the great things that have been happening.

After Miriam was born, Jeremy had the opportunity to spend a lot of one on one time with Emily while Rachel was in the hospital. Here are some pictures that he took of her on their trips to the park. It's hard to believe, but these pictures were taken in December when it was still warm outside.

Big sister. Little sister. I've got a feeling that these two are going to be a tag team.

Rachel's mom and dad and her sister Megan came up from Mexico to help us out for a little while after we had the baby and to spend Christmas with us. We really enjoyed our time with them and we're glad that they made the trip. Here's a picture of Grandpa Call showing Emily the children's sized kitchenette that they gave her (it used to be Rachel's when she was a little girl).

Jeremy, Megan and Emily made a snowman one morning after a snowstorm. Emily loves to sing the snowman song and do the actions.

For New Year's Eve, my parents got a condo at a resort in Henefer Utah (about a hour east of Salt Lake City). It was a lot of fun and we wished that we could have spent more time there. Here's a family picture that we took.

The people that stayed at the condo right before us had built a huge snow dragon. It was almost twice as tall as I am. Emily kept calling it "Big 'nowy"

Miriam had her baby blessing this past Sunday. Special thanks to Rachel for passing on her good looks to both of her daughters.

Fun in November

For Thanksgiving, we went down to St. George to visit Emily's Great Grandpa Pearson. Jeremy's mom and dad drove up from Arizona to be there, too. It was a lot of fun to relax and enjoy everyone's company. Great Grandpa Pearson even took us all out for a ride in his Model T Ford.

Just a few days ago, Emily became fascinated with her baby doll. She always wants to wrap it up in a blanket, give it some cheerios to eat and water to drink, and sing it a song to help her get to sleep. It's almost like she can sense that the baby is coming really soon. Do children come with ESP or something?
It's been snowing in Provo lately. Emily absolutely loves it. Several times a day she lets us know that she wants to go outside by trying to turn the doorknob to the front door while crying out "Noh! Noh!" (Snow! Snow!) We let her play in it every now and then, but it seems like it took her awhile to realize that snow is cold. She kept throwing her gloves off and diving in--only realizing the half numb/half stinging feeling in her fingers a minute later. We're going to start putting plastic bags around her forearms with rubber bands to hold them tight.

Emily is starting to learn how to do a somersault, but she has trouble because her torso is so longer than her legs. I think that she just needs a running start.

Halloween!

Even though Emily had a cold for most of this past weekend, Halloween was a lot of fun! She was definitely the cutest ladybug ever. Since it rained all evening on Saturday, our ward activity stayed inside and Emily went trick-or-treating around the hallways at the chapel. She loved that everyone wanted to give her candy! We even let her have a little fun and eat a bunch of it at home while we watched a movie. (We've hidden the rest of the candy so that we can all enjoy it a lot more slowly...)

We did carve a pumpkin this year, but it decided to rot really fast, so therefore no pictures of Jeremy's masterpiece. All in all we had a great weekend though we were all worn out afterwards. Now to recuperate in time for Thanksgiving and baby sister and Christmas! Phew!

Emily is learning Spanish: poco a poco

We thought that everyone might like to see some cute videos of Emily starting to speak Spanish and trying to floss her teeth. For all those non-Spanish speakers, "mono" means monkey. She also says "agua" (it comes out more like "wagua"), but only when she feels like saying it.

Moving back to Utah

We finally found our camera cord so we can upload some pictures from our moving trip from Minnesota to Utah. These pictures are about a month old.

We stopped by Mount Rushmore right about at the halfway point to Utah. Jeremy had never been there before, and it turned out to be really fun.

The Crazy Horse Monument was only about 15 miles away from Mt. Rushmore and was on our way. We didn't actually want to spend a whole lot of time there but we still wanted to take a picture. The only problem was that you can't see it from the road and you have to pay a $10 admission to drive in and get a look. We almost wanted to tell the guy at the gate, "Look, the statue isn't even finished yet." Defeated, we just asked him if we could turn around. "Sure," he said, "Just drive straight all the way down the hill and there will be a round about." That got us just close enough to take this picture. Hehehe...

As we were driving through Wyoming we saw a sign for 'Marten's Cove: LDS Church History Site'. We didn't even realize that we were going to pass it! We were just taking the route that Google Maps told us to take. Some of Jeremy's ancestors were in the Martin Handcart Company and one of Rachel's ancestors was in the rescue party that saved their lives. If those handcart pioneers hadn't found shelter from the wind and snow at Martin's Cove (a horseshoe shaped mountain formation) they all would have died. Many of them still perished in spite of it. Here's a picture of us at Devil's Gate, which was just a couple miles from Martin's Cove.

Yes, we made it to Provo! We have moved in, Jeremy has started school and work, and Emily and I have been keeping ourselves busy at parks and such while he's gone all the time. But...the sad lack of pictures? Well, in all our organized moving, the camera cord has disappeared for the time being.

So, we hope to find it soon, so that we can get pictures on here from all our adventures lately.

and doesn't she have a nice profile?! Emily is excited to have a baby sister soon, I think. Baby Sister is healthy and growing really well, so we are very happy!

Here are some pictures of Bemidji highlights. Paul and Babe, and then the Beavers and other art pieces all over town. Emily really enjoyed walking around and checking everything out. We've really loved it here, but next week we get to go back to Utah! Go Cougars!

PS. We have finally learned that Emily can't play with working phones anymore...Yes, we actually had the whole 911 embarrassing moment. The officer was nice; he and his partner were laughing when they left because apparently the number Emily dialed was 911 1111 011# or something like that. Oh, the joys of parents learning to be...parents! We are grateful though that there was no real reason to call 911! We're all healthy and happy, just getting rid of our pride... :)

Well, we don't have a lot of pictures, but we did have a really fun time! Thanks to Ben we have a few more pictures of Emily. Even with the lack of sleep and long traveling days, it was great to be with family and enjoy David and Jamie getting sealed.

We got to Utah after a whole day of driving and flying to enjoy pizza and paletas with family the night before the wedding.

The next morning was the sealing and Emily was really happy hanging out with new friends as well as family:

Jeremy was an immediate favorite with the children that Ben and Ashlee are taking care of, and they definitely adored Emily, so it was very fun!

We had a wonderful weekend! Our highlight was visiting the Headwaters of the great Mississippi. Emily loved wandering around with us and especially swimming and wading across the Mississippi River. :) The water was so clear and we got there early enough that for a while we were the only ones around. Beautiful and peaceful area! It was definitely an amazing adventure for us!

Happy Father's Day Weekend!

Well, we certainly had a great weekend to celebrate Father's Day! On Saturday, Emily wore a special shirt to let her Daddy know what she thinks of him. :) Then we had an awesome ward activity out at one of the many lakes around here. They did a dutch oven cook-off/potluck dinner, so of course everyone ate well. Then even though it wasn't a very warm day, Emily had to follow the other children's example and get in the water. If you notice she has her jacket on while she's wading. Later we had to strip her down so she wouldn't get her dry clothes for later wet. :) It was so much fun! She can't keep away from water once she sees it. Later when we had gotten Emily warm and into dry clothes again we were able to ride on a pontoon that someone in our ward had rented. Emily really loved that a lot. She was pretty good at keeping her balance walking around on there, too.

And a special thanks to Grandma Pearson for sending us so many goodies, clothes and just helping us out this summer! Here's a shot of the pajamas she made for Emily Jean! We love them! Thanks so much!

Orders have arrived

It's official-Jeremy is going to be a COSTEP this summer. His call to active duty date is next Monday. And the best news is that they are going to give us six days of paid leave, so we can go to both weddings this summer without changing our flights. Wahooo!!!!

The pictures of the rainbow at the beach were taken a only a step outside of our hotel room. Emily had a blast when we went swimming at the indoor pool. We ate at a restaurant that was right next to the water. It was beautiful and the food was really good.

Jeremy is all done with his work out there so we won't have to live at a hotel room again for a few months. We had fun, but it's nice to be home.

Trip to Detroit Lakes

We just got back from a trip to Detroit Lakes; a city which is surrounded by a few of the many lakes here in Northern Minnesota (ten thousand to be exact). Jeremy had some work to do there so they sent our whole family over for a few days--all expenses paid. They let Jeremy have Friday off since he worked so hard earlier in the week, so we decided we would rent a pettle boat and take a ride out on the lake. We thought Emily would like it a lot, but she was fussy most of the time we were out on the water. I think that she wanted to jump in. It just kept taunting her but we refused to let her succumb to the temptation. Here are some pictures of her when she was happy:

By the way, BIG NEWS--President Obama finally signed the executive memo so that Jeremy can become a commissioned officer! You can read all about it here: The White House. Now we just have to wait for headquarters to process his papers and he'll be on active duty status. Hooray! :)

Well, we finally made it to Bemidji, Minnesota. And yes, we finally have access to the internet again. Jeremy started work on Monday and everything is going well for him so far. He has been so busy, though, getting us settled and also working hard to get his independent study class finished soon. He also takes care of our yard and he even planted a little garden. We are loving it here, so far. It's really a beautiful place and it's so nice to have a comfortable though big home with a yard and open space. There are trees all around our yard and the leaves rustle in the wind and oh, wow! it is so peaceful. I really have missed the country, small town feeling. We live a few miles out of the city, so it's very quiet out here. Anyway, it takes me forever just to write one or two sentences, what with Emily wanting something or other, so I'll just sum up our trip.

We took two days to drive to Omaha, NE and on the way we found this funny little museum at one of our stops for gas and food. Basically, it was about the people who moved out to Nebraska and lived in sod huts back in the day. There were newspaper clippings showing how people made more like sod mansions sometimes. Huge and fancy homes made basically of adobe! It was crazy! We had fun stopping there.

We stayed with my Uncle Pratt and Aunt Cherlyn for a day in Omaha, and had a great time relaxing and visiting Winter Quarters. I think our Visitor's Center tour guide sister wanted to teach us more, but Emily just kept running around corners and getting into things, so we had to rush it a little bit. I think she was tired of being cooped up in the car for so long, and I don't blame her! :)

Our last drive was the longest day, but we survived somehow with quite a few tears on Emily's part, finally making it to Bemidji and our new home. Emily is loving the open space and she is really enjoying the great outdoors. We are definitely feeling blessed and happy to have a job and a home to live in right now.

FINALLY, we are going to Minnesota! The COSTEP still isn't worked out yet, but they've hired Jeremy as a civilian intern for the time being. So, we get to leave this coming Monday! Hurray!

Also, we've been trying to keep ourselves occupied for the time being, and yesterday we went to a baseball game. It was BYU against UVU and we had free tickets so we thought we'd have some fun! It was great! BYU won 14-10. Jeremy ate our hot dogs that we got for free, and was sick later during the night. Emily and Rachel both got dropped on... by a little bird... three times. (we did move to other sits after that) But we won, so it's all good, right?

Other than that, Emily's biggest adventures have been growing out three teeth at the same time, and throwing up strawberries. It's been some rough riding, but we try to enjoy the ride. :)

Jeremy Exceeded his Goal on the GRE

He scored an 800/800 on the quantitative, but even more impressive and exciting is that he scored a 630/800 on the verbal. That's 30 points higher than his goal. There was an essay portion but those scores won't come in for another few weeks. He did say that he felt really good about his essays, though. He is so excited because now he won't have any problem getting into a good graduate program. Hurray!

Our Trip to Minnesota is Almost Definitely Delayed

Because of a mistake that was made on the new health care bill passed last month, the Public Health Service cannot call any interns to active duty service.Until this is worked out, Rachel and I can't go to Minnesota.

The trouble arises from some reforms that they tried to make to the PHS in the health care bill. The reforms had the intention of creating a Ready Reserve program consisting of PHS officers on reserve status that could be deployed in the event of a national health emergency (like a hurricane or earthquake). These reforms would expand the current emergency relief program and would be somewhat similar to other reserve programs in the Army, Air Force, etc.

The mistake seems to lie in the fact that the new law requires the President to personally appoint all PHS reserve officers. This clause overlooked the fact that all of the interns in the Commissioned Officer Student Training Extern Program (COSTEP) are technically called as reserve officers. It was never intended that the President would have to personally approve every COSTEP, but you can't ignore what the law actually says. PHS administration is working right now to get an Executive Order that will give authority to the PHS to call the COSTEPs to active duty without individual presidential appointment.

Basically, that means that we're in limbo right now. We don't know when the problem will be solved. We already sold our apartment lease and I already did my last day at work at the MTC. We're still optimistic that everything will work out and that we'll get to go to Minnesota later on in the summer. Hopefully, it will only delay us a couple weeks. Luckily we have a few months savings, so we should be all right, until everything is worked out.

Emily's birthday bash was a lot of fun. Emily seemed exceptionally happy and excited all day long (it's as if she understood that it was her special day). HUGE EVENT: Emily took her first three steps yesterday!!!!!!!!!!!!! 'Course that doesn't mean she's actually walking, but hey! it's a start. :)

Emily is so good about eating plenty of fruits and vegetables as long as they are "real" and not in the form of baby food. She's so smart! One of her favorite veggies is asparagus; yes, she loves it. Here she is enjoying some cooked bell pepper, another favorite.

I'm pretty sure there is no superstitious weirdness about the 15 of January, so that's nice. I feel like we usually fill up our blog with pictures, which is okay, because pictures seem to say a lot more sometimes. But today I feel like typing out something.

Right now it seems we are constantly waiting...

Waiting for Emily to start walking...waiting for spring to come (but we're okay waiting)...waiting to know which internship will hire us...(which means we are:)waiting to know where we will be living this summer...

and other silly waiting things: waiting for the sun to come up...waiting for it to come down...waiting for the bread to rise...waiting for the kitchen to clean itself...waiting...

Anyway! Waiting can be a good thing, because we learn patience and we learn to enjoy each moment as it comes; knowing that every good thing comes with time and effort and...waiting, often enough. Some good things come as a surprise and with very little effort on our part such as the thoughtfulness of someone leaving a bag of very delicious muffins hanging on our door this morning. Mmmmmm! Take time to smell the roses...or to eat the muffins. Better save some for Jeremy, though! :)

Jeremy's improved computer program

I don't know if anyone cares too much, but the last Sudoku Solver would only solve the easy puzzles. I improved on the program so that now it will solve even the hard ones.

I tested this version with a lot of Sudoku puzzles I found on the internet and it looks like it will work with all but the most difficult ones. I'm pretty sure that it will solve any puzzle that you'll find in the newspaper.

Jeremy's New Computer Program

I had just left my computer programing class and was on my way to work when I had a great idea about a computer program that I could write that would solve Sudoku puzzles. When I got home, I quickly went to work on the idea and, a few hours later, I came up with this:

The program runs off of the old school white-on-black DOS terminal, so isn't too user-friendly. I programmed it so that you could manually type the numbers in, but it's kind of hard to type 81 numbers in without making a mistake. I recommend the easier method of writing a text file like "puzzle.txt" and telling the program to read the data from your file. Make sure to put a space between the columns and save your file in the same folder as SudokuSolver.exe .

The program should work on most Windows operating systems. Let me how it goes if anyone tries it out.

The Master Crawler and Feeding the Ducks

Here are some photos of Jeremy and Rachel's pumpkins that weren't quite finished yesterday but are finished now. Both of them were done with a two tone style in which some parts are completely cut through and other parts only have the dark orange skin shaved off. This skinning technique gives the jack-o-lantern the illusion that carving is shaded.

This is the one that Rachel did. It is a really scary ghost. It even looks good when it's not lit up at night.

This is the one that Jeremy did. It a copy of the painting by Simon Dewey where Christ is washing the feet of one of the apostles. Compare it to the original painting.

Our Littlest Pumpkin

Here are the results of our pumpkin carving night. Jeremy is still working on his, because his will take quite some time. We invited our Chinese neighbors, as well as Justin and Emily. It was so much fun!

We bought a whole bunch of pumpkins for our jack-o-lantern carving night. But we all agree that the cutest pumpkin of all is Emily, of course. Don't worry, we didn't let her do any carving. You know what would happen if we let her have a knife: straight to the mouth.

Determination, by Jeremy

This is a story about how my brothers and I went on a hike in Madera Canyon with the determination to conquer mount Wrightson (9453 feet).

When we were about to leave, David noticed that his key wouldn't turn on the trunk of his brand new 1995 Toyota Corolla. The trunk release was also jammed. This ordinarily wouldn't be a problem except that the trunk contained Robert's backpack--and that backpack contained enough food and water to supply the troops in Afghanistan for three months!

After several failures, I decided our only hope was to take off the back seat of the car. Within minutes I was in the trunk. David pulled out the backpacks and said "OK, let's get going." But I said, "No, I am determined to open that trunk.

So, I crawled into the trunk. I soon learned that if you have an emergency in Arizona, your trunk is designed to double as an oven. I also learned that in 1995, the Japanese didn't understand the need for an emergency release cord.

After 30-40 minutes it dawned on me to just take the bolts off the locking mechanism. A few minute later, the trunk was opened and I felt the cool 110 degree Tucson air rush through my face.

Then David said, while looking at his trunk and back seat lying around in pieces, "But wait, how am I supposed to drive back to Casa Grande like this?" At that point I really didn't care because I had opened that trunk. I conquered the trunk.

So then, we took off for the mountain (three hours late). We took the the brand new Jeep Cherokee that Ben had bought from the used car dealership earlier that week. We were worried at the trail head when we saw radiator fluid spilling out of the jeep. But we didn't think too much about it because we were determined to conquer that mountain.

Then, we started walking. It turned out to be real fun. Ben slipped once. His shoes had no treads. Robert was determined to eat all of his food before we got back. Ben was determined to take pictures of everything 'cool' that he saw. David was determined to be cool. I was just determined.

After we got halfway up the mountain, one of us (who shall not be named) was really struggling. He twisted his ankle, his muscles were sore, and he started feeling elevation sickness (we were at 8000 feet). But we were determined to conquer that mountain.

After a few minutes, we realized that it was three in the afternoon. If we continued to the top at our slow pace (taking pictures, twisting ankles, feeding Robert, etc.) that we wouldn't be able to make back before dark. Reluctantly, we turned back.

As we approached the jeep, we all decided that we had set out determined to conquer the mountain but in the end it had conquered us. 'It may have beat us this time,' I said 'but it isn't going anywhere for awhile'. We took off in the jeep and told jokes all the way home.

Well, here is a picture of me at 7 months along. It sure feels like this baby is growing super fast, though, so maybe in a week or more I might be lots bigger.
